Periodontal Treatment (utilizing laser technology - non surgical)

Periodontal or gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is a leading cause of tooth loss in American adults. It has also been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other health problems.

Plaque is the sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth that contain many different strains of bacteria. Proper brushing and flossing usually removes most of the plaque. When plaque isn't removed, it causes the gum tissue to become inflamed and slightly swollen. You may notice that there is some bleeding when you brush or floss because of this inflammation.

The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. The gums may be reddened and swollen and bleed easily when brushing and flossing. Gingivitis is completely reversible if diagnosed early and treated properly. If gingivitis is left untreated, it leads to periodontitis, which results in loss of the supporting structures around the teeth, mainly the gum and the bone. In this more advanced stage, teeth can start to become loose and fall out. Once you lose bone, the damage is irreversible. Proper treatment can prevent the loss of more bone and preserve the teeth.

We have an advance waterlase laser, specifically designed to remove the harmful periodontal bacteria. Treatment is rapid, painless, and can be done without anesthesia. Special medications can be placed under the gums which contain antibiotic preparations that continue to eliminate the bacteria. The success rate of our specifically designed non-surgical periodontal program is guaranteed when patient compliance is strictly followed.

With the diagnostic capabilities of our digital radiographic equipment, which can determine bone density and early bone loss, we can help you eliminate the leading cause of tooth loss in the adult population. Even advanced stages of periodontal disease have responded favorably to the detailed non-surgical program used at Cosmetic Dentistry Center of San Diego.
